Deferred or Waitlisted: Understanding The Difference

Home - Blog Detail

Being waitlisted or deferred by a college is not a rejection. If you are placed on a college’s  waitlist, it mean one or more of the following:

  • The college is still reviewing your application but has decided to put it on hold. The institution could be waiting to see how many spots it’ll have in its incoming class.
  • It could mean that the college wants to see more from you through additional requested materials. The college will let you know.

If you are waitlisted, you can accept or reject the waitlist. If you reject the waitlist, you are no longer under consideration for that college. If you accept the waitlist, still consider guaranteeing a spot at another institution, but be ready to accept the invitation to the waitlisted college, if it’s what you really want, and an acceptance follows suit. At most colleges, the deadline to accept their offer is May 1st.

Being deferred is also not a rejection. However, it does mean that you are no longer considered for early decision or early action. What it does mean is that your application is now going to be reviewed under the regular admissions guidelines. While the application is being further reviewed, you can reach out to the college either by phone or letter to the admissions office to express your continued interest in the college.
